If the concrete floor in your Humble, Atascocita, or Houston-area home is stained, dull, or cracked at the surface, you have two broad choices: rip it out and start over, or resurface what you have. For most worn-but-sound slabs, a concrete overlay is the more practical answer. Here is how to tell.
What an overlay actually is
A concrete overlay is a thin, cement-based layer applied over a prepared slab. Once cured, it can be stained, stamped, polished, or sealed. Our interior concrete overlays and exterior concrete overlay work follow the same principle: fix the surface, keep the foundation.
When an overlay is a good fit
- The slab is structurally sound and stable.
- The surface is stained, pitted, dull, or has hairline cracks.
- You want a new look - metallic, marbled, stained, or polished.
- You want to avoid the dust, noise, and cost of demolition.
When replacement is the better call
If a slab has settled unevenly, has wide or moving cracks, or has major moisture problems, any surface finish will eventually show those flaws. In that case the underlying problem needs to be addressed first. We tell customers honestly when that's the situation - it's part of every free estimate.
Why Houston-area slabs need extra care
Our clay soil, humidity, and heavy rain mean slabs expand, contract, and take on moisture. Good prep and a sealer matched to the location are what keep an overlay looking right for years. If you're curious how a refinished floor looks, browse our project gallery.
What to ask any contractor
- How will you inspect and prepare the slab?
- What system and sealer will you use, and why?
- What does the written quote include?
- Will you follow up after the job?
Not sure whether your slab can be resurfaced? We'll inspect it and give you a written, no-obligation answer.
